Cecilia Adeng starts work as permanent representative to the UN

Ambassador Cecilia A.M. Adeng makes history as the first female Permanent Representative of South Sudan to the United Nations, signaling a new era of diplomacy and representation.

Ambassador Cecilia A.M. Adeng officially commenced her role as South Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations by presenting her credentials to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on February 12, 2024.

She becomes the first female to hold the position since independence in 2011, replacing Akuei Bona Malwal, who has served as the Permanent Representative of South Sudan to the UN from 2016 to 2023.

“Ambassador Adeng, an experienced diplomat, brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong commitment to advancing the interests of South Sudan within the United Nations framework,” the South Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

“Her appointment as Permanent Representative positions her as a key figure in fostering dialogue, promoting cooperation, and addressing global challenges,” it added.

Prior to this role, she served as the Deputy Permanent Representative of South Sudan’s Mission to the UN in New York.
