The military police in Giada has announced yesterday evening that civilians residing in Giada must evacuate the area within the next seven days. According to the source, the directives were from the army headquarters in Bilpham.
Yai Beny Till, a resident of Giada, said that all the local shops within the premises had been closed since last Monday. “We only go to buy our basic needs from either Jebel Suk or Suk Jida as none of the shops, not even clinics, are operating within Giada,” Yai said.
The majority of civilians in Giada are families of soldiers who cannot afford rental fees and are very concerned about the government’s directives.
Achol, whose husband has been deployed for military operations in Nasir, expressed her worries, saying, “Where does the government expect me to go with my children who are not soldiers, especially as the rainy season is approaching, and I cannot afford rent? Where will I go with my kids?” Achol said to Hot in Juba.
Another resident, Kuol Muorwel, expressed his disappointment, saying, “It would be better for the government to allocate land to the civilians and give them time to build their houses before the move. If the government truly cares about the people, it needs to first allocate enough land to accommodate the civilians residing in Giada.”
The current Giada Fence was constructed in 2015, and the people living under it were not provided with any relocation area by the government, thus forcing them to reside there. As a result, Giada has become a mix of civilians and the army.
