To address societal challenges and promote better community, the Twic East Community convened for Twic East Community Global Conference in Panyagor, Jonglei State, from March 10 to March 15, 2024, and made a landmark decision to reduce the traditional bride price.
The conference resolved that the optimal acceptable dowry for a bride would be fixed at thirty (30) heads of cattle or their monetary equivalent. This significant reduction from previous customary practices aims to alleviate financial burdens on families and facilitate easier marriages among the younger generation.
Included in the maximum dowry of 30 cows are various traditional items such as aping, thooc, adhukwuiin, biol, and wengeer. Additionally, the resolution stipulates that the transfer of cattle or its monetary equivalent takes effect upon the completion of marriage negotiations (Lei), and any delay from the girl’s side after this negotiation rests with her family.
Furthermore, the resolution reads that each unit of cattle must not be accompanied by cash (athuat), and any compensation for delays or losses due to delays will be borne by the girl’s family.
