Former Minister of Agriculture in the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU), Lam Akol has said armed rebellion is the quickest means to topple President Salva Kiir.

Lam Akol while addressing a press conference at the Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday, the former minister said they were ‘forced to take up arms.’

“The war was imposed on us in the opposition and we don’t have a choice to make rather than re-taking arms along with other oppositions parties against the autocratic regime of Salva Kiir,” Akol said.

Akol who is now the leader of a new rebel movement National Democratic Movement (NDM) which was formed last month claimed he is already assembling forces on the ground in South Sudan.

“I already have armed forces on the ground, there is also an ongoing recruitment for more soldiers to participate in the struggle to topple Kiir’s dictatorial government,” he revealed.

Akol, besides being a former Agricultural Minister in the TGoNU, is the former leader of the National Alliance, a coalition of opposition political parties opposed to the government until he resigned after July’s violence.

The press conference was attended by a coalition of South Sudan Civil Societies in Kenya alongside other figures opposed to President Kiir’s government. Attempts to get in touch with the government for comment wasn’t fruitful by press time.
